I just don't get this place... I mean, this school is really upside down. Yesterday was mostly a typical day. But the day ended with a really rough bang.
A couple of weeks ago, my Friday second grade class devolved into a sharing time: why my father is in prison. Not what was on my lesson plans for that day, I promise. And out of the 17 students present - we had a few out sick and one in trouble - 13 of the students had fathers either currently in or recently released from prison.
I've tried to be especially careful of keeping our class on track since then. Sticking to procedures, not leaving time for off-topic ventures. Part of our daily routine is to have a student read our music room principles (5 rules) and then we have a check list we do as a class.
Yesterday's reader was messing around with the recorder that was sitting on the chalk board rail and another student said that he should leave it alone.
Reader - in front of the entire class - F*** it.
Me - what did you just say?
Reader - repeats what I thought he'd said.
Me - on the phone to the office - just wanted to check, I know we don't do office referrals often, but is this one? - explains what has happened...
Office - no, we'll handle it after school.
So I speak with the classroom teacher after school and she tells me: nothing will be done. She points to a picture on her desk and says that boy had been in the office for a two hour time out and a slap to his wrist for asking a girl in his class to "suck [his] cock"
THESE ARE 8 YEAR OLDS!!!!!
The upside down part is that the teachers are in trouble all the time. I'm worried about every little thing. I have gained weight since starting at this school. Am constantly on edge and stressed. And I am being evaluated some time in the next eleven school days...
